What's New in OD 6.0

There are many new and exciting features in OD 6.0!  There are over a hundred changes from the previous version, so we've listed some of the important ones below:

Friends and Bookmarks

Your old Favorites list has been divided up into two separate lists - Friends and Bookmarks.  Your Bookmarks list is now just for keeping track of people that you like to read, while the new Friends list is for you to pick which of your friends can have access to your entire diary or specific entries.

This means that we don't use the old term "favorites only" anymore when talking about who can access your diary or entries - now we call these diaries and entries "friends only".  Your Friends list has already been populated with the people that you had checked "yes" for "Read FO entries" on your old Bookmarks list.

Finally, if you are an OD Plus member, you can now put your Friends and Bookmarks into groups - to help keep them organized, and (in the case of Friends) to help determine which entries they will be allowed access to.

Picture Storage

If you are an OD Plus member, you can now store up to 20 meg of image files right here on our servers, and link them easily to your diary entries.  Image upload can be done from the entry writing screen, or from the new My Pictures screen (found under the "diary" menu in the OD menu bar).

New Dropdown Menus

Navigation around OD has been made much easier by the addition of new dropdown menus in the menu bar at the top of the screen.  If you've been around OD for awhile, you may remember that we used to have menus like this a few years back - but they were removed from the current software because they were causing problems with some browsers.  This new version is much more stable and browser-friendly, so we've brought the menus back.

E-Mail Notifications

If you are an OD Plus member, you can now choose to receive e-mail notifications when your Bookmarks post a new entry.  Notifications can be set up individually, for each of your Bookmarks.

New Entry Tags

Now you can tag your entries with tags you create yourself, and that other people can see.  Tags show up with your entries, and also in a new Tag Index screen that displays all of your entries and tags.

International Date and Time Display

We've changed all of OD, so it will now allow you to see dates and times in the format you are used to.  All date and time displays are now sensitive to the language settings in your browser - so if you normally see dates in UK format, or Hong Kong format, or whatever - they will show up on OD that way too.

In addition, if you want to set your date and time format to something different from your browser's default (like if you're an English person using an American browser) you can change your language settings in the Personal Profile screen.

Better Diary Downloads

We are offering two new download formats for your diary: XML, and PDF (for Plus members only).  In addition, there are new selections to download entries for specific months, or for chapters in your diary (Plus members only).

New Spellchecker

We've built in a new spellchecker, for both entries and notes, which actually works - and works both with or without the WYSIWYG editor.  We've also added the spellchecker to the diary description page.

Improved Random Entries

You now have the ability to limit entries you see when using the "Random" button by age, sex, and geographic location.  These settings are saved and always used unless you change them.  We have also added a "random in this diary" selection, which will take you to random entries within a particular diary.  Finally, we've increased the pool of entries that the random button visits by ten times from what it was before - so the entries you see should be much more varied and random.
